A cleaning services company director faces nine charges for failing to pay service tax and penalties totalling RM38,362 between 2021 and 2024

GEORGE TOWN: A director of a cleaning services company has pleaded not guilty to nine counts of failing to pay service tax and penalties amounting to RM38,362.

Mujeebur Rahman Hithayatullah, 34, entered his plea at the Sessions Court here after the charges were read separately before Judge Irwan Sunaibon.

The charges allege he failed to settle the service tax as a taxable person under the Service Tax Act 2018 within stipulated periods from November 2021 to April 2024.

He was charged under Section 26(8) of the Service Tax Act 2018, which carries a maximum penalty of a RM50,000 fine, three years’ imprisonment, or both.

Royal Malaysian Customs Department prosecuting officer A. Uvarajan handled the case, while the accused was unrepresented.

The court has fixed 31 March for the submission of documents and the appointment of counsel.
