DAP insists a Royal Commission of Inquiry is needed to probe corporate mafia allegations against MACC, arguing the agency cannot credibly investigate itself.

PUTRAJAYA: DAP is intensifying its call for a Royal Commission of Inquiry to investigate serious ‘corporate mafia’ allegations made against the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.

The party’s national chairman, Gobind Singh Deo (pic), stated that the MACC’s dismissal of the claims as baseless is insufficient given their gravity.

“It is a fundamental principle of justice that no one should be a judge in their own case,” he said in a statement.

Gobind, who is also the Digital Minister, argued that a self-issued clearance does little to restore public or investor confidence.

He emphasised that DAP believes there is sufficient basis for an inquiry, warranting an RCI with the statutory powers for a proper probe.

The allegations have attracted widespread attention both domestically and internationally.

“This is not about looking for fault or blame on the part of anyone, but rather to reaffirm that the MACC remains beyond suspicion,” Gobind added.

He stressed that the call is about strengthening the MACC, not undermining it.

The claims involve senior MACC officials allegedly pressuring corporate executives to resign or sell shares at deep discounts.

The anti-graft body has denied the allegations, calling them an unfounded attempt to tarnish its credibility.

It stated the claims originated from an anonymous online blog with no clear accountability.

The government has formed a special investigation committee chaired by the Attorney General to probe the allegations.

This committee will also examine claims involving MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki.
