11-second clip shows rat roaming cashier counter at a restaurant in Petaling Jaya, raising hygiene concerns as staff appear unaware of the situation

THE sight of a rat in any restaurant or eatery is enough to immediately raise questions about hygiene, no matter how brief the moment.

In a setting where food is handled and served, even a few seconds can be enough to unsettle customers and trigger wider concern.

An 11-second clip on Threads by @aly_freerun from an unidentified restaurant in Petaling Jaya shows a rat roaming freely across the cashier countertop, raising immediate concerns over hygiene and food safety.

In the video, the rat of average size can be seen moving along the counter, appearing to search for food.

Several stacks of egg cartons are visible on the same surface, suggesting the rodent may have access to food preparation or storage areas.

The camera pans left and right, as if the person recording is checking whether any staff notice the animal, but to their dismay, no workers appear to react.

The location of the outlet remains undisclosed.

Calls to reveal the restaurant’s identity came quickly. “The video owner should reveal the name of this shop to prevent others from going there for their safety. But since they haven’t, for now, maybe avoid mamak shops around PJ,” wrote @daniel_dzulqarnain.

Others echoed the concern, warning of potential health risks. “Get infected by rat urine, and that’s the end,” said @sahrizal_79, while @idgf_71 added, “Just reveal it. Do you want us to risk getting infected?”

Some commenters argued that withholding the name could unfairly affect other businesses. “If it’s already at this level, please just name the shop. Otherwise, people who don’t know will start suspecting other mamak shops,” wrote @_maheranismail.

There were also broader observations about hygiene in food establishments.

“Cockroaches and rats—if you don’t take early and consistent preventive measures, they’ll definitely appear, especially in eateries,” said @wanz5228, who shared a past experience involving a rat at a private hospital facility.

One user, @amirashazwin, claimed familiarity with the location. “This is below my office. Two years ago, I reported them for charging different prices for the same food and drinks over three days. They said it was due to rent and renovation costs, but the same items went up RM1.50. Now there are rats too—great.”

As of now, it is unclear if any report has been made to health authorities.
