Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari says education is vital to build a resilient society and address rising family violence and crime

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government continues to emphasise education as a fundamental pillar in building a resilient society.

This focus comes amid concerns over rising crime rates, particularly cases involving violence among family members.

Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said the evolving social landscape and pressures of the digital era require educational institutions to play a more comprehensive role.

He stressed the need to foster a balance between identity, human values and global connectivity.

“Some individuals tend to become increasingly isolated in a highly digitalised society,” he said.

This isolation creates gaps in understanding, empathy and shared values within social relationships.

Amirudin, who is also the state Education Exco, addressed over 700 attendees at an education event yesterday.

He warned that failure to achieve this balance could lead to a fragile society more vulnerable to social challenges.

He cited several recent murder cases involving family members as evidence. These cases show that access to information alone does not guarantee wisdom, emotional maturity or ethical judgment.

“We live in a ‘connected world’ where everything is at our fingertips, yet gaps still exist,” he said.

He added that society is increasingly choosing to distance itself, and information access does not necessarily make people wiser.

Amirudin argued that children must be educated and the younger generation must be guided through academic and values-based education. Otherwise, society risks becoming ill-equipped to face present-day realities.

Commenting on youth anxiety, he said changes driven by social media require a more holistic educational approach.

This approach must encompass character development, digital literacy and the strengthening of noble values.

He stressed that education remains the key to progress, unity and the future of the state.

Therefore, all stakeholders must be mobilised in an integrated manner to ensure continuous improvement in educational quality.

Earlier, Amirudin witnessed the exchange of memoranda of understanding between Yayasan Selangor and several education institutions.

The collaborations aim to align curricula and training programmes with current job market needs and technological developments.

He said the collaboration has strong potential to provide broader exposure opportunities for students.

This includes greater industry engagement and the expansion of TVET and STEM programmes.
