A woman claims fireworks triggered a fire in front of her mother’s home in Beseri, Perlis

A woman claimed that fireworks were responsible for igniting a fire directly in front of her mother’s home in Beseri, Perlis, sparking renewed public debate over the dangers of fireworks and the apparent ease with which they are sold despite restrictions.

“This is not a jungle — there are houses on the left, right, and at the back,” she wrote in her post on Threads.com underlining just how densely populated the area is and how quickly the situation could have turned catastrophic.

She credited the swift thinking of her father and brother, who immediately grabbed a long pipe and rallied neighbouring residents to help connect it and douse the flames with water while waiting for help to arrive.

“Alhamdulillah, the firefighters arrived and slowly managed to extinguish the fire,” she added.

The incident quickly drew attention online, with netizens highlighting a combination of factors that made the situation particularly dangerous.

Commenters pointed out that dry grass ignites with even the smallest spark, and that the current spell of hot weather has made fire hazards significantly worse across the country.

The conversation, however, quickly turned to a broader concern — the apparent resurgence of fireworks sales despite longstanding restrictions.

One netizen noted that while fireworks now appear to be sold openly.

“Sellers are happy, buyers are happy — but who becomes the victim when a fire breaks out or someone is injured?” the commenter pointedly asked.

Another individual questioned why authorities have not taken firmer action against vendors operating in plain sight, claiming that fireworks are now being sold just metres away from police stations in some areas.

“How can they not know?” he asked.

The Beseri incident serves as a stark reminder that fireworks, however festive they may seem, carry real and potentially devastating consequences — particularly in tightly packed residential areas during dry and hot weather conditions.
