PUTRAJAYA, Oct 10 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim called on Malaysians to support global efforts for peace in Gaza and to refrain from stirring political discord at home.

He said the world’s attention, including from Egypt, Qatar and Hamas, is now on ensuring the success of reconciliation efforts in the region, especially after the recent announcement that Israel and Hamas had agreed on the first phase of his Gaza peace plan.

“The focus of the entire world, including Egypt, Qatar and Hamas, is to find a way to ensure that this peace process succeeds. So we in Malaysia are also praying for that,” he told reporters after performing Friday prayers at Presint 11 here.

“Let us not raise objections to the visits or similar matters, because right now we are appealing to all countries, including our plea to President Donald Trump, to ensure that this agreement is signed and subsequently implemented,” he added, referring to the US president’s upcoming visit to the Asean Summit in KL this month.

“I hope that spirit will prevail. We are, of course, praying, but we also want to achieve results,” he added.

Anwar said that Malaysians must not lose sight of human suffering in Gaza, where civilians continue to be killed and displaced.

“People are being killed. Their land is occupied. Children and women continue to be murdered. What we want is to stop all that,” he said.

Anwar said he was disheartened by attempts to politicise Malaysia’s efforts for peace, calling such actions unhealthy and counterproductive.

He also praised Malaysians who took part in humanitarian missions such as the Gaza flotilla, describing them as brave individuals willing to risk their lives to help others.

“Not everyone is willing to risk their lives to help the people of Gaza.

“To those who have, we express our gratitude and prayers. This, I hope, will be the attitude among Muslims and all Malaysians,” he said.
