A foul smell led to the discovery of three family members dead in their Merbok home, with police investigating a homicide where the son is the suspected perpetrator.
SUNGAI PETANI: A foul odour led to the discovery of three bodies inside a family home in Kampung Belau, Merbok late last night.
Kuala Muda police chief Hanyan Ramlan identified the victims as Zikri Abdul Rahman, 65, his wife Suraya Man, 53, and her son, Muhammad Shakir Zufayri Abdul Aziz, 29.
Police received a report around 12.30 am from concerned members of the public.
They had not seen the couple for three days and noticed a strong smell emanating from the house.
“Upon inspection, the house was dark, the smell was strong, and the door was locked from the inside,” Hanyan said.
He added that officers were forced to break in to gain entry.
The bodies of the husband and wife were found in the kitchen area.
The body of the 29-year-old man was discovered upstairs.
Initial investigations indicate the case is a homicide.
Police believe the 29-year-old man is the suspect and was also found dead at the scene.
“The couple are believed to have died more than 48 hours before discovery,” Hanyan stated.
He said the younger man is believed to have died more recently.
Police recovered several sharp weapons from the house.
Investigations suggest the incident occurred between Monday night and the discovery of the bodies.
Hanyan confirmed the 29-year-old man had a history of mental health issues between 2018 and 2019.
He was not known to have caused disturbances in the neighbourhood previously.
Another child of the female victim, who serves in the military, had returned to Johor earlier this week.
They had been in Kedah to celebrate Hari Raya.
Five witnesses have been called to assist in the investigation so far.
All bodies have been sent to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital for post-mortem examinations.
The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
