Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim tells students that global competitiveness requires moral integrity and adaptability, not just academic success.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today faced a barrage of questions from university students on education, careers, leadership, media freedom and the future of work in the age of artificial intelligence (AI), stressing that Malaysia’s youth must be prepared for global competition while upholding ethics and social responsibility.

During the Temu Anwar @ TAR UMT session, students asked whether those in private universities could benefit from the PTPTN loan-to-scholarship scheme.

Anwar said education must be as affordable as possible, particularly for students from lower-income families.

“While current support focuses on the neediest, the government is exploring ways to extend assistance to deserving students in private institutions, stressing that funds must be properly managed and protected from misuse,” he said.

“I can only give assurances that in the current government, we are strict. Anyone who steals money — whether Tan Seri or Datuk Seri — will be caught.

“We will seize the funds. Last year, in 2025, we saved RM15.5 billion from leaks. This is money meant to return to the people for education and health.”

On keeping Malaysians globally competitive, Anwar highlighted attracting international students and improving the quality of local universities.

He stressed that academic excellence must be paired with ethical awareness and social responsibility, preparing students for success beyond exams.

Speaking on leadership, the Prime Minister said young Malaysians must cultivate more than knowledge.

“Discipline and dedication in learning are necessary, but knowledge alone is not enough; morality, ethics, and humanity must guide one’s actions.

“I have read philosophy and humanistic works, including Confucius and Spanish philosophers like Ortega y Gasset, who wrote about The Revolt of the Masses. They warn that extreme specialisation without understanding humanity can lead to barbarism.

“You may see people with PhDs who are experts but use their knowledge to steal, cheat, or harm society. Leadership combines expertise, character, and moral integrity.”

Concerns about AI replacing human jobs were also raised. Anwar acknowledged its efficiency benefits but stressed that human creativity, judgement, and problem-solving cannot be replaced.

He urged students to develop adaptability, innovation, and transferable skills to stay relevant in a rapidly evolving workforce.

On media freedom, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the need for a free and professional press, while emphasising that freedom must be balanced with responsibility.

“I agree with the principle that media should be free and professional. However, freedom comes with responsibility. We cannot allow misinformation, exploitation, or abuse, such as inappropriate content involving youth or women.

“We live in a mature society, not in the 1950s or 60s. Space must be given for freedom of expression, but boundaries exist to protect beliefs, communities, and societal harmony. Ministers and I will continue reviewing policies to ensure journalists can operate professionally while respecting the law and community standards.”

Temu Anwar provides university students with a direct platform to engage the Prime Minister, enabling them to raise pressing issues, seek clarity on policies, and share concerns about their education, career prospects, and the nation’s future.
