Geneva’s Grand Theatre sells 15,000 historic stage costumes, from angel wings to a monumental leafy gown, in a rare public sale

GENEVA: The Grand Theatre opera house is selling off thousands of its historic stage costumes in a rare public sale. Sandra Delpierre, head of costume workshops, described the collection as containing “real treasures to be found.”

The sale features 15,000 garments, accessories, and shoes from major productions. Items range from vests and tunics to dresses and leotards, with prices from five to 500 Swiss francs.

A standout piece is a monumental green costume priced at 995 Swiss francs. Marianne Perreau, overseeing the sale, said it “truly embodies everything that makes a remarkable costume.”

The costume, worn in an opera about philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau, is composed of overlapping green leaves embroidered with gold thread. It features a bodice over a boned skirt fitted with a farthingale for volume.

Other notable items include large animal heads, an embroidered Handel opera dress, and extravagant bird costumes with dyed pink feathers. Delpierre explained the sale is necessary to rotate and renew the collection for new productions.

“We’re forced to make a difficult choice,” she said, citing limited storage space. The sale will be held on February 14 and 15, with a time slot reserved for professionals.

The opera house expects buyers to include performing arts institutions, collectors, and individuals. Delpierre said it is perfect for “people who dress more eccentrically and want to find a truly exceptional piece for their wardrobe.”

Every costume is labelled with its production, role, and performer. The sale offers a chance to own “a living fragment of the show” from the majestic theatre which opened in 1879.
