German Chancellor Friedrich Merz says the Middle East war must end quickly, stressing it benefits no one and harms many economies, including Germany’s.

BARDUFOSS: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called for the Middle East war to end “as soon as possible”. He stated the conflict “benefits no-one and harms many economically, including us”.

Speaking at a press conference in Norway, Merz emphasised that Germany shares the “important goals of the United States and Israel”. He outlined demands for Iran to cease threatening Israel, end its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes, and stop supporting terrorism.

However, Merz expressed deep concern over the ongoing escalation. He noted that “with each day of war, more questions arise than answers” and that “a convincing plan is needed” for conducting the conflict.

“We are witnessing a dangerous escalation,” Merz said. He condemned Iran’s actions, which have made the Strait of Hormuz impassable and targeted regional states, including Germany’s partners.

When asked about direct European contact with Iran to reopen the vital strait, Merz confirmed all diplomatic channels are being used. He stressed the collective effort to end the war, stating, “We have no interest in an endless war”.

“We need a perspective for a peaceful order now,” the chancellor concluded. He made the remarks alongside Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store and Canadian counterpart Mark Carney.
