German expat reveals RM14 KL to KLIA route, offering a cheaper alternative to costly trains and e-hailing rides
IT may be time to find smarter ways to stretch our travel budgets, especially as many commuters continue to complain about surging e-hailing fares around airport areas.
In a recent post on Threads, a German expatriate shared a surprising yet practical tip on how to cut travel costs between Kuala Lumpur and KLIA by reducing a journey that typically costs over RM50 to just RM14.
The user, known as @agermaninmalaysia, pointed out that the KLIA Ekspres from KL Sentral costs around RM55, while e-hailing services such as Grab can range from RM80 to RM100 for the same route.
Offering a cheaper alternative, he explained that he spent only RM14 by taking a longer, multi-transfer journey.
His suggested route begins at Hang Tuah Monorail station, followed by a transfer to the LRT at Chan Sow Lin, then switching to the MRT Putrajaya Line to its final stop, Putrajaya Sentral — costing RM4.60.
From there, travellers can board the KLIA Transit to the airport for RM9.40, bringing the total fare to just RM14.
“Same airport, much cheaper. Don’t throw your money out of the window. I’m a German living in Malaysia and slowly learning Kuala Lumpur,” he wrote.
He also advised using Touch ‘n Go for a smoother ticketing experience, noting that the savings could easily cover “two really good meals” in Malaysia.
One frequent KLIA Ekspres user welcomed the tip but admitted concerns over time and convenience. “I can’t afford the unpredictability of traffic jams with e-hailing. It gives me chills and too many butterflies in my stomach. Travelling weekly can be costly, but I don’t have time to hop in and out. Still, it’s a good suggestion to try someday,” she said.
Another commenter, Azman, highlighted that the direct train journey takes just 28 minutes, while the suggested route could take up to three times longer. “If time is not an issue, it’s an economical option,” he noted.
The original poster acknowledged this trade-off, adding that while KLIA Ekspres remains the safest and most convenient option, his budget route is best suited for those who are not in a rush and looking to save money.
