Communications Ministry and MCMC to facilitate Google’s data centre and cloud investment, aiming for RM3.2 billion economic impact and 26,500 jobs by 2030.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Communications Ministry and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission will continue facilitating Google’s USD 2 billion investment in the country.

Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said efforts include ensuring infrastructure readiness and regulatory compliance.

This aligns with Malaysia’s goal to become a regional hub for secure data, cloud computing and artificial intelligence innovation.

The investment covers Google’s first data centre and cloud services in Malaysia.

It is expected to generate an economic impact of USD 3.2 billion and create 26,500 jobs by 2030.

“Malaysia continues to be trusted as a leading destination for the digital economy,” Fahmi said in a Facebook post.

He shared photos from a video conference involving Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Alphabet’s President Ruth Porat.

Google announced the RM9.4 billion investment commitment in May 2024.

It includes developing a data centre, a Google Cloud Region, and AI literacy programmes.

These initiatives aim to meet growing local and global demand for cloud services.
