Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof says the government is intensifying efforts to reduce non-revenue water and strengthen the national supply system.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is intensifying efforts to reduce high non-revenue water rates and strengthen the national water supply system. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said issues like pipe leaks, water theft, and ageing infrastructure significantly impact system efficiency.

Continuous efforts are underway to upgrade infrastructure and strengthen monitoring. The goal is to ensure every drop of water reaches the people, he said in a Facebook post for World Water Day.

Fadillah, also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, said the government is committed to a more sustainable approach. This includes investment in smart technology and holistic water resource management.

He said inter-agency cooperation is crucial to guarantee national water security. Malaysia is blessed with abundant resources, but management challenges are growing more complex.

Climate change and rapid development are increasing pressure on the system. “We cannot take lightly the threat of water source pollution,” Fadillah added.

Irresponsible activities and waste disposal are putting pressure on rivers and dams. The Water Sector Transformation Roadmap 2040 serves as the nation’s long-term plan for improvement.

The roadmap aims to ensure sufficient clean water supply and modernise the sector. However, government efforts alone are insufficient without public support.

Fadillah said water-saving practices need to become a daily culture. “Use water wisely, fix leaks at home, and avoid wastage,” he urged.

He stated that every small action has a big impact on the future water supply. The international World Water Day theme this year is “Water and Gender Equality”.

This theme emphasises justice and the role of all parties in managing resources. The national-level theme is “Water Belongs to Everyone”.

It reminds that every individual has a right to clean, safe, and sufficient water.
