Chief Secretary and Public Service DG will present a detailed working from home proposal for non-critical public sector roles at the next MTEN meeting.

PUTRAJAYA: Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar and Public Service director-general Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz will present detailed proposals on working from home for the public sector at an upcoming National Economic Action Council meeting.

MADANI Government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had requested the comprehensive follow-up at today’s Cabinet meeting for a decision after Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

“The Cabinet today received an initial report from the Chief Secretary, which was also prepared by the Public Service director-general, regarding WFH for the public sector,” said Fahmi, who is also Communications Minister.

He clarified that the proposed WFH implementation would specifically exclude critical sectors such as education, healthcare and frontline services.

Fahmi noted that current discussions are centred on civil servants due to the sector’s large size and the need for coordinated government policy.

“However, the government does not prevent the private sector from implementing WFH if they feel there is a need at this time,” he added at a post-Cabinet press conference.

The Prime Minister also instructed ministers to proactively engage with their agencies and industry stakeholders to understand sector-specific challenges.

Fahmi cited Transport Minister Anthony Loke’s recent discussions with aviation players following developments in West Asia as an example of this directive.

The findings from these engagements will be compiled to guide potential government initiatives and assistance for affected sectors.
