Fahmi Fadzil says WFH policy for non-critical public services will be finalised after Hari Raya Aidilfitri

PUTRAJAYA: The government is refining its proposed work-from-home (WFH) policy for the public sector, with a focus on non-critical services, before making a final decision after Hari Raya Aidilfitri, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

He said the Cabinet has received an initial report on the proposal, prepared by the Chief Secretary to the Government and the Public Service Department, outlining preliminary considerations for implementing WFH arrangements.

However, Fahmi said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has instructed that several aspects of the proposal be further refined and better structured before it is tabled again for a decision.

“The Prime Minister has requested that the report be improved and presented in a more comprehensive manner at the upcoming National Economic Action Council (MTEN) meeting, which will take place after Hari Raya Aidilfitri,” he said at a post-Cabinet press conference.

He added that the proposed policy will prioritise non-critical sectors, taking into account the need for careful coordination given the large size of the public sector workforce.

At the same time, Fahmi noted that private sector companies are not restricted and may continue implementing work-from-home arrangements, as many have done since the COVID-19 pandemic, depending on their operational requirements.
