Malaysia’s Immigration Department intensifies raids at Ramadan bazaars, detaining 23 foreigners for illegal trading and working without valid permits.
PUTRAJAYA: The Immigration Department has intensified nationwide enforcement at Ramadan bazaars to curb illegal trading and employment of foreign nationals.
Director-General Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said 61 foreigners were inspected at several Klang Valley bazaars, with 23 detained for suspected immigration breaches.
“JIM will step up inspections at Ramadan bazaars, as these locations usually attract foreign nationals to conduct business,” he told a press conference.
He noted that some stalls operated by locals illegally employ foreign workers.
Zakaria added that enforcement operations are also targeting other locations frequented by foreign nationals.
“There are also small colonies where they trade among themselves, and these too will not escape inspection,” he said.
On cases of foreigners driving without licences, Zakaria said the department will collaborate with the Road Transport Department.
He cited media and public reports of unlicensed foreigners driving lorries transporting construction materials.
“This is indeed a matter of concern, and we will identify those involved and take appropriate action,” he said.
The press conference was held after the department’s Semarak Ramadan programme.
At the event, senior immigration officials distributed *bubur lambuk* to the public and officers on duty.
