India’s petroleum ministry prohibits households with piped gas connections from obtaining or refilling LPG cylinders to curb dual fuel subsidies.

NEW DELHI: The Indian government has banned households with piped natural gas connections from accessing domestic liquefied petroleum gas cylinders.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas announced the policy on Saturday through an amended supply order.

The amendment explicitly prohibits consumers with PNG connections from retaining, obtaining, or refilling domestic LPG cylinders. It also bars government oil companies from providing new LPG connections or refills to these households.

This move is aimed at curbing the practice of availing dual fuel subsidies. The government subsidises both PNG and LPG for domestic consumers.

Officials stated the rationalisation is intended to ensure efficient use of resources and target subsidies more effectively. The policy is expected to affect millions of households across major cities and towns with PNG infrastructure.
