Prime Minister Narendra Modi urges global democratisation of AI at summit, warning against humans becoming mere data points for technology.
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for artificial intelligence to be made accessible and inclusive for all.
Speaking at a global AI summit, Modi warned that the technology must be democratised to prevent humans from becoming mere data points.
“AI has to be democratised so that humans don’t just become a data point for AI or remain a raw material for AI,” Modi said in Hindi.
He stressed that AI must become a medium for inclusion and empowerment, particularly for the Global South.
Modi highlighted recent AI model launches by Indian companies during his address at the AI Impact Summit.
He stated that an AI model succeeding in India could be deployed worldwide.
“India believes that AI technology will only be beneficial when it is shared and its core systems are open; only then will our millions of young minds be able to make it better and safer,” Modi added.
The prime minister emphasised the need for AI to be used for the global common good.
Breaking into English, he described an era of collaboration between humans and intelligent systems.
“We are entering an era where humans and intelligence systems co-create, co-work and co-evolve,” Modi said.
The summit is the fourth annual international gathering focused on the rapidly advancing AI field.
India recently leapt to third place in a global AI competitiveness ranking by Stanford researchers.
Experts note the country still has a long way to go to rival the United States and China.
This is despite India’s plans for large-scale infrastructure and grand innovation ambitions.
