Iranian authorities detain 20 individuals in the northwest for allegedly spying for Israel, part of a broader crackdown on foreign-linked networks.

TEHRAN: Iranian authorities have arrested at least 20 people in the country’s northwest on suspicion of cooperating with Israel.

The arrests took place during raids on networks linked to Israel in West Azerbaijan province, the Fars news agency reported on Sunday.

Provincial prosecutor Hossein Majidi said the individuals were detained for “sending details of military, law enforcement and security locations to the Zionist enemy”.

The operation is part of a wider security crackdown across Iran in recent days.

Local media reports indicate hundreds of people have been arrested on suspicion of links to Israel and the United States.

The conflict began with US-Israeli strikes on February 28 that killed Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The attack sparked immediate retaliation from Iran, escalating tensions in the region.
