Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claim to have found and destroyed more than 120 unexploded cluster munitions in Fars province, alleging they were from US and Israeli attacks.
TEHRAN: Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they had discovered and dismantled more than 120 unexploded cluster bombs in a southern province.
The elite force alleged the munitions were dropped during US and Israeli attacks on the region “several days ago”.
“So far, 122 cluster bombs have been discovered and destroyed around Shiraz and in several towns,” the ISNA news agency quoted Guards official Jalal Yarmohammadi as saying.
The statement did not specify the exact timing of the alleged attacks that dispersed the bombs.
Cluster munitions are controversial weapons that release multiple smaller bomblets over a wide area.
Unexploded bomblets can pose a long-term threat to civilians, functioning as de facto landmines.
The claims could not be independently verified by international media.
Iran and Israel have been engaged in a long-running shadow war, often involving accusations and covert actions.
The United States maintains a significant military presence in the Middle East, frequently clashing with Iranian-backed groups.
Such public allegations of direct attacks by US or Israeli forces on Iranian soil are less common.
The Revolutionary Guards are a powerful Iranian military and security institution.
They play a key role in projecting Iran’s influence across the Middle East.
No immediate comment was available from Israeli or US officials regarding the Iranian claim.
