Iran signals flexibility on nuclear talks if US discusses lifting sanctions, with a second round of talks set for Geneva.

GENEVA: Iran is prepared to consider compromises to reach a nuclear agreement with the United States. Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi (pic) stated this willingness is contingent on Washington’s readiness to discuss lifting sanctions.

He confirmed a second round of nuclear talks will occur on Tuesday in Geneva. This follows initial discussions held earlier this month in Oman.

“(Initial talks went) more or less in a positive direction, but it is too early to judge,” Takht-Ravanchi told the BBC. He cited Iran’s offer to dilute its most highly enriched uranium as an example of its flexibility.

This potential action would be in exchange for the lifting of all financial sanctions. The senior diplomat reiterated Tehran’s firm stance against accepting zero uranium enrichment.

This issue was a key impediment to reaching a deal last year. The US views enrichment inside Iran as a pathway to nuclear weapons, a claim Iran denies.

The talks aim to revive the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. Former US President Donald Trump pulled the US out of that agreement during his first term.

The original deal eased sanctions on Iran in exchange for limits on its nuclear programme. A US delegation is set to meet with Iranian officials in Geneva, with Omani representatives mediating.
