Iran’s clerical body will convene within a day to select the next supreme leader following the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, a member says.
TEHRAN: Iran’s Assembly of Experts will meet within the next 24 hours to choose the country’s next supreme leader.
The announcement was made by Hossein Mozafari, a member of the 88-strong clerical body, according to a report by the Fars news agency.
“With divine assistance, this session will occur within the next twenty-four hours,” Mozafari was quoted as saying.
He also urged the public to avoid speculation and refrain from spreading rumours about the succession process.
The assembly has not yet formally convened for a session to deliberate on the matter.
This development follows the killing of the former supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in a reported US-Israeli attack one week ago.
