Iran’s new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei is safe and well, says president’s son, dismissing reports of injuries sustained during the ongoing Middle East conflict.
TEHRAN: Iran’s new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei (pic) is “safe and sound” despite reports he was injured during the war with Israel and the United States.
The son of the Iranian president, Yousef Pezeshkian, made the statement on his Telegram channel on Wednesday.
“I heard news that Mr Mojtaba Khamenei had been injured. I have asked some friends who had connections. They told me that, thank God, he is safe and sound,” said Pezeshkian, who is also a government adviser.
State television had previously referred to Khamenei as a “wounded veteran of the Ramadan war” without providing specific details about any injury.
The new supreme leader is the son and successor of the Islamic republic’s longtime ruler Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The elder Khamenei was killed in US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, an event which triggered a war across the Middle East.
Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, is a discreet figure who has rarely appeared in public or spoken at official events.
He has yet to address the nation or issue a written statement since he was declared supreme leader on Sunday.
In a separate report on Wednesday, the New York Times quoted three unnamed Iranian officials saying Khamenei “had suffered injuries, including to his legs”.
The same report added that he “was alert and sheltering at a highly secure location with limited communication”.
