MANCHESTER United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe has apologised for his “choice of language” after stating the “UK has been colonised by immigrants”.
The billionaire businessman made the remarks during a television interview, where he suggested “huge levels of immigration” had harmed the UK economy.
His comments prompted calls for an apology, including from Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
“I am sorry that my choice of language has offended some people in the UK and Europe and caused concern,” Ratcliffe said.
He clarified his intention was to stress the importance of “controlled and well-managed immigration that supports economic growth”.
The 73-year-old founder of Ineos said his comments were made while discussing UK policy at the European Industry Summit in Antwerp.
Ratcliffe said he was focusing on “the importance of economic growth, jobs, skills and manufacturing in the UK”.
He added that governments must manage migration alongside investment in skills and industry.
“It is critical that we maintain an open debate on the challenges facing the UK,” he stated.
