Johor police deploy over 2,000 personnel for Ops Selamat, focusing on traffic hotspots and accident blackspots during the festive travel period.
JOHOR BAHRU: Johor police will monitor 47 traffic hotspots and 38 accident blackspots throughout the Ops Selamat 26 Hari Raya Aidilfitri operation.
The operation runs from tomorrow until Tuesday in anticipation of a 20% surge in vehicles entering the state.
State police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said the country’s two main border routes will be a key focus. “The Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI) and the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB) will also be a focal point due to the expected higher traffic flow during festive seasons,” he said.
A total of 2,018 personnel are being mobilised for the operation. This includes officers and rank-and-file members from various departments and the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT).
Ab Rahaman said Ops Selamat focuses on preventing burglary, minimising road accidents and ensuring smooth traffic flow. The operation carries the theme “Share the Journey, Share Comfort, Safety First”.
Commenting on last year’s statistics, he said Ops Selamat recorded 1,642 accidents with 26 fatalities. Police also issued 10,189 summonses for various traffic offences during the period.
“Seven of the fatalities recorded involved motorcyclists,” he added.
He advised motorists to plan journeys in advance and ensure their vehicles are in good condition. The public is encouraged to inform police of their trips by filling out a ‘Balik Kampung’ form at stations or via the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP) application.
As of Monday, a total of 117 notifications had been received via VSP with an equal number of forms submitted by the public.
