Road Transport Department drones captured over 2,300 traffic violations during a three-day festive operation, with overtaking and running red lights among the top offences.

KOTA BHARU: The Road Transport Department recorded 2,384 traffic offences using drone technology during its three-day Ops Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2026 operation.

The operation, which began on March 16, identified four main violations.

JPJ Enforcement senior director Datuk Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said 715 cases involved overtaking on double lanes. A further 627 cases were for disobeying traffic lights.

Another 539 offences were for overtaking on the left, while 503 involved using emergency lanes.

“Every offence recorded will be used as evidence and JPJ will issue an interview notice to the vehicle owner involved,” he told reporters after the operation.

He highlighted the technology’s efficiency, noting that 200 offences could be detected by a drone in just 45 minutes.

The department currently has six drone units for use at its headquarters.

Plans are underway to expand their use in all future enforcement operations.

“The use of these drones is not intended to find road user offences, but rather as a proactive measure to record and identify offences that are the cause of accidents,” Muhammad Kifli said.

He explained the approach focuses on safety by ensuring road users are more disciplined.

A review of the JPJ database identified 288 accident and offence hotspots nationwide.

Kelantan led with 53 locations, followed by Sarawak (50) and Perak (34).

In Kelantan, the most significant offences involved cutting queues and violating traffic lights.

All recorded offences fall under provisions of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Offenders receiving a notice can make a compound payment within 15 days for a 50% discount.

This reduces the total payment to RM150 after the deduction.

JPJ stressed that its high-capacity drones have a zoom function of up to 200 times.

This allows vehicle registration numbers to be clearly identified from a long distance.
