England captain Harry Kane agrees with Bayern Munich’s call to rest him from the first March friendly, prioritising fitness for a crucial club and international period.
ENGLAND captain Harry Kane has publicly supported Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel’s decision to rest him from the national team’s first friendly this month.
Kane was among 11 players Tuchel confirmed would skip Friday’s match against Uruguay to join the England camp later ahead of Monday’s friendly against Japan.
Speaking after scoring in Bayern’s 4-0 Bundesliga win over Union Berlin, the 32-year-old striker called the move “a really sensible decision”. He explained the rest period is crucial for managing a demanding schedule leading into the 2026 World Cup.
“I think it makes sense when we look at the April schedule, May and then going into the World Cup, trying to use this time now to be as fresh as possible in that period,” Kane said.
He acknowledged that players likely wouldn’t feature in both international friendlies anyway. Kane emphasised the importance of using the break wisely to stay physically sharp while getting vital mental rest.
The other players granted additional time off are Dean Henderson, Dan Burn, Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa, Nico O’Reilly, Eliott Anderson, Declan Rice, Morgan Rogers, Anthony Gordon and Bukayo Saka.
England will host Uruguay at Wembley on Friday before facing Japan at the same venue on Monday.
