Kelantan police will focus on 109 accident and congestion hotspots during Op Selamat, deploying drones and personnel to enforce traffic laws

TUMPAT: Kelantan police have identified 109 locations as key focus areas for the Chinese New Year Op Selamat operation beginning today.

State police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said 42 of these are congestion-prone ‘hotspots’ while 67 are accident-prone ‘blackspots’.

Enforcement will concentrate on six main offences including speeding, illegal overtaking, and using communication devices while driving.

“We will also deploy drones to monitor traffic congestion and motorists committing traffic offences,” he told reporters after a road safety campaign here.

The Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department will deploy 30 officers and 200 personnel to these locations.

Additional measures include establishing a Jam Squad and ‘Op Lancar’ operations from February 11 to 22.

An Op Selamat Subtek Operations Room has also been set up to collect reporting data throughout the operation period.

“Personnel will be deployed round the clock to ensure monitoring and immediate action at the locations involved,” Mohd Yusoff said.

He noted a decline in crash cases during previous Chinese New Year operations.

Statistics show 252 crashes with eight fatalities in 2024, compared to 228 crashes involving three fatalities last year.

The public is advised to check social media for traffic flow updates and alternative routes before travelling.
