Property crime and fatal road accidents also increase in the first quarter, while violent crime shows a decline.

CHUKAI: The crime index in Kemaman district rose by 9.6% for the first quarter of the year. A total of 57 cases were recorded from January 1 to March 23, compared to 52 cases in the same period last year.

Kemaman district police chief Supt Mohd Razi Rosli said the increase was driven by theft cases. These jumped 31.8% to 29 cases, up from 22 previously.

Property crimes also increased by 17.9%, with 46 cases recorded against 39 last year. Motorcycle theft showed a significant 50% rise to six cases.

“However, violent crimes showed a decrease of 15.4% to 11 cases compared to 13 cases in the same period last year,” he said in a statement.

On road safety, Mohd Razi said fatal accidents increased by 200%. Nine cases were recorded, compared to just three in the same period last year.

Meanwhile, police issued 15,555 summonses from January 1 to March 23. This represents a 10.89% increase from the 14,027 summonses issued last year.
