Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli wins his first grand prix in Shanghai, leading a team one-two ahead of George Russell, as Lewis Hamilton secures his first Ferrari podium.
SHANGHAI: An emotional Kimi Antonelli secured his maiden Formula One victory at the Chinese Grand Prix. The 19-year-old Mercedes driver led a dominant one-two finish for the team ahead of teammate George Russell.
Antonelli, the youngest pole-sitter in F1 history, controlled the race after regaining the lead following the start. He finished more than five seconds clear of Russell, with Lewis Hamilton completing the podium in his first top-three finish for Ferrari.
“I’m speechless, I’m about to cry to be honest,” said Antonelli, fighting back tears. He thanked his team for helping him achieve his dream, adding he wanted to bring Italy back to the top.
The race began dramatically as both McLarens failed to start due to separate technical issues. Hamilton made a strong start to briefly lead, with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc also passing Russell early on.
The top four engaged in a close battle before a safety car intervention on lap 11. After the pit stops, Antonelli emerged in the lead ahead of Hamilton, Leclerc, and Russell.
Russell later passed both Ferraris to secure second place by lap 29. He praised his young teammate after the race, noting the special nature of a first victory.
Hamilton expressed his happiness for Antonelli and his former team. “I’m so honoured to be able to share this moment with him,” said the seven-time champion, acknowledging Mercedes’ current performance advantage.
Max Verstappen’s difficult season continued as Red Bull told him to retire his car on lap 46. Oliver Bearman finished fifth for Haas, followed by Pierre Gasly and Liam Lawson.
The result cuts Russell’s early championship lead to just four points over his teammate. For McLaren, it was another disastrous weekend after similar troubles in Melbourne.
