King of Malaysia receives briefing on the Online Safety Act 2025, which aims to protect children and families online with age verification and platform accountability.

KUALA LUMPUR: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, was briefed on the Online Safety Act (ONSA) 2025.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil delivered the briefing during an audience at Istana Bukit Tunku.

According to a post on the King’s official Facebook page, the act aims to make the internet safer for families and children.

It establishes clear responsibilities for online platforms and enforces age verification mechanisms.

These mechanisms are designed to prevent children under 16 from opening social media accounts.

Fahmi stated that the act also seeks to tackle issues involving fake accounts targeting the Malay Rulers and royal family members.

Effective from January 1, ONSA provides a legal framework to enhance online safety.

It strengthens protections for users, particularly children and families.

The act outlines responsibilities for licensed service providers to address online harm.

These include implementing risk-based security measures and providing specific protections for children.

Service providers must also establish user reporting and assistance mechanisms.

ONSA applies to service providers holding Application Service Provider or Content Application Service Provider licences.

It also covers Network Service Providers under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
