Only ‘Happy Boom’ fireworks and ‘Pop-Pop’ firecrackers are permitted for Chinese New Year sales, with strict rules on permits and usage times to ensure public safety

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have authorised only two specific types of festive items for sale during the Chinese New Year celebration.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said only ‘Happy Boom’ fireworks and ‘Pop-Pop’ firecrackers are permitted because they contain no explosive materials.

However, their sale still requires a permit from the relevant district police headquarters and must comply with stipulated specifications.

“Anyone found possessing, selling, purchasing or playing with firecrackers and fireworks other than those permitted may face action under Sections 7 and 8 of the Explosives Act 1957,” he said in a statement.

Offenders convicted under the act face a penalty of up to seven years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to RM10,000, or both.

Fadil also reminded the public not to set off firecrackers and fireworks after midnight.

He said this could disrupt public order and pose a danger to others.

Those who fail to comply may face action under the Minor Offences Act 1955 and the Explosives Act.

He stressed that unauthorised possession, sale, purchase, or use of firecrackers remains an offence under the law, even during festive celebrations.

“The public is advised to comply with the stipulated laws to ensure the safety and well-being of the community,” he added.
