Malaysian Highway Authority boosts festive readiness with 12 emergency teams, 873 cameras and smart lanes to manage 3.5 million daily vehicles.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) is deploying Emergency Response Teams (ERTs) at 12 strategic locations for the Aidilfitri period.
It is also activating 873 closed-circuit television cameras across the national highway network to monitor traffic movements.
LLM director-general Ir Mohd Hadzmir Yusoff said this forms part of maximum preparedness for a surge reaching 3.5 million vehicles daily.
The ERT deployment involves collaboration with police, fire and rescue, the Road Transport Department and ambulance teams.
“This ensures prompt assistance should any untoward incidents occur,” he said on Bernama TV’s Ruang Bicara programme.
CCTV monitoring allows the traffic control centre to swiftly identify congestion, accidents or breakdowns.
This information is then relayed to road users via 277 digital signboards along the highways.
The traffic data is also sent continuously to police patrol cars for swift ground action.
Dissemination occurs through LLM’s social media platforms like TikTok and Facebook for real-time updates.
“Road users can monitor conditions and exit at nearby interchanges to avoid gridlock,” Mohd Hadzmir added.
To support electric vehicles, LLM is providing charging stations along the routes.
Currently, 144 electric charging points exist at Rest and Service areas and lay-bys.
“We aim to add at least 50 more charging points this year,” Mohd Hadzmir said.
PLUS Malaysia Berhad Operations senior general manager Mohd Yusuf Abdul Aziz also appeared on the programme.
He said 34 Smart Lanes will be activated along PLUS highways to ease and disperse congestion.
All scheduled maintenance work will be fully suspended to ensure no lane closures.
Only emergency works will be permitted during the festive period.
Overall, 6,000 personnel will be on duty along highway stretches and rest areas.
Their coverage extends to toll plazas to ensure optimal system and facility condition.
