The Malaysian Armed Forces is reviewing all PALAPES training procedures following a cadet’s death, with three instructors now charged in court.
KOTA TINGGI: The Malaysian Armed Forces is conducting a comprehensive review of its training modules and procedures for the Reserve Officer Training Unit.
Chief of Defence Force General Datuk Malek Razak Sulaiman said the review aims to identify and rectify any shortcomings following a cadet’s death last year.
It encompasses regulations, procedures, and the scope of all training activities. Particular focus is being given to physically demanding components like live-fire drills and combat training.
“Military training is demanding, but it is conducted within clear boundaries of what is allowed and what is not,” Malek Razak stated.
He emphasised that all activities must strictly adhere to established guidelines and procedures. The review also seeks to improve modules to prevent any excessive or improper conduct during exercises.
This move reaffirms MAF’s commitment to professional, disciplined, and safe training. The goal of building physical and mental resilience will not be compromised.
Three armed forces instructors were charged at the Kota Tinggi Sessions Court yesterday. They are accused of causing the death of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia PALAPES officer cadet Syamsul Haris Shamsudin.
The 22-year-old cadet died at Hospital Kota Tinggi on July 28 last year after undergoing training in Ulu Tiram. His remains were later exhumed for a second post-mortem on the orders of the High Court.
Malek Razak confirmed that MAF will cooperate fully with the authorities. The welfare and rights of all involved will be safeguarded throughout the legal process.
“If there are breaches of guidelines or actions that exceed procedures, we have internal mechanisms to take action,” he added.
The case was reclassified for murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code in December last year. This followed further investigation by the Royal Malaysia Police as directed by the Attorney-General’s Office.
