In a video that has since circulated widely on TikTok, a Proton Persona was seen refuelling with RON98, sparking reactions from netizens.

AMID fluctuating fuel costs—with current prices for RON95 and diesel standing at RM3.87 and RM6.02 respectively—many motorists are increasingly conscious of their spending, often prioritising subsidised options like the BUDI95 scheme.

However, a recent viral video from Johor Bahru has captured public attention for an entirely different reason: a driver of a standard Proton Persona was spotted filling their tank with premium, high-octane fuel.

The video, which has circulated widely on TikTok, shows the driver opting for a high-performance fuel brand.

In many markets, such premium fuels, often classified as RON98 or higher, are specifically engineered for high-compression, performance-oriented engines.

These fuels contain advanced additives designed to clean engine components, reduce friction and enhance overall power and acceleration.

As of April 2, such premium fuel can cost as much as RM8.28 per litre, a stark contrast to the standard subsidised RON95 (RM1.99) and the non-subsidised RON97 (RM4.95).

The clip quickly gained traction, with many netizens humorously identifying the act as a sign of “real wealth”.

“This is what being truly rich looks like—driving a modest car but having the means to afford the most expensive fuel,” one user commented. Another quipped, “This is a ‘humble T20’ moment.”

However, automotive enthusiasts were quick to offer a more pragmatic explanation, suggesting the choice was likely strategic rather than ostentatious.

“People often use RON98 or even RON100 to help clean the engine, particularly when there is significant carbon build-up.

“It can noticeably improve throttle response and engine health,” one commenter explained.
