Traffic on major highways heading towards Kuala Lumpur is heavy tonight due to a surge in vehicles returning to the city after Aidilfitri celebrations
KUALA LUMPUR: Traffic on major highways heading towards the capital was congested as of 8.30pm tonight.
A spokesperson for the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) said the congestion involved vehicles moving from the north, south and East Coast towards Kuala Lumpur.
On the North-South Expressway (PLUS) E1, the most critical situation was detected on the southbound stretch from Alor Pongsu to Taiping Utara. This involved a 18-kilometre congestion due to a very high volume of vehicles.
In the southern sector, a 14-km congestion was reported from Ayer Keroh to Simpang Ampat, with estimated delays reaching 40 minutes.
Traffic flow from the south towards Kuala Lumpur was also reported to be slow at several locations. These included from Bukit Gambir to Jasin and from Pedas Linggi to Senawang.
However, traffic flow at the Sungai Besi Toll Plaza was reported to be smooth so far.
For users of the East Coast Expressway (LPT), severe congestion stretching 25 km was reported from the Karak Toll Plaza to Lentang.
Traffic was also moving slowly from Genting Sempah towards the Gombak Toll Plaza for entry into the capital.
The spokesperson said congestion also occurred on the West Coast Expressway (WCE), particularly around the Hutan Melintang Toll Plaza heading towards Sabak Bernam. Traffic was slow-moving all the way to the Federal Route.
LLM advised users to remain patient and careful on the road as traffic flow is expected to remain high until late tonight.
