Malaysia and the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs are expanding collaboration on satellite technology and talent development, including a new Centre of Excellence.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is set to deepen its collaboration with the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) to advance the nation’s capabilities in space technology.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi revealed the enhanced partnership followed a courtesy call from a UNOOSA delegation led by its director Aarti Holla-Maini at his office.

Key initiatives discussed include establishing a Centre of Excellence for Satellite Technologies through a collaboration between Universiti Kuala Lumpur and the company ReOrbit.

The partnership will also focus on cultivating local talent via the High Technology Technical and Vocational Education and Training approach.

These efforts are designed to provide the country’s younger generation with early exposure to the entire spectrum of space technology.

Ahmad Zahid stated that UNOOSA has expressed readiness to broaden academic and industry cooperation internationally.

This expanded cooperation includes developing Space Law programmes and fostering networks with global universities and space technology firms.

“I appreciate UNOOSA’s commitment in supporting Malaysia’s efforts to develop its satellite technology ecosystem and local talent,” said Ahmad Zahid in a Facebook post.

He expressed confidence that the step would help propel the country further in the realm of future technologies.
