The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security is ramping up measures to protect national food supplies from geopolitical tensions and extreme weather
KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) has intensified preparedness efforts to safeguard national food security. This action addresses ongoing geopolitical conflict in West Asia and the current hot weather.
Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the focus is on enhancing supply management efficiency. Efforts will also strengthen the agro-food value chain and implement mitigation measures.
He stated that global uncertainties from the West Asia conflict could disrupt supply chains. Higher oil and logistics costs from this may ultimately impact food prices.
“At the same time, the country is facing challenges posed by hot weather and climate change, which could impact agricultural productivity and domestic food production,” he said in a Facebook post.
Mohamad assured that essential food supplies for the upcoming Aidilfitri celebration will remain stable. Supplies will be sufficient and accessible at competitive prices.
He credited this to integrated cooperation between KPKM and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living. Government agencies and the industry also contributed to ensuring sufficient and stable supply.
“The MADANI government remains committed to ensuring that the country’s food supply is sufficient, stable and accessible to the people under all circumstances,” he said.
Mohamad called on all parties to continue playing their roles in strengthening the national food system. This includes industry players, farmers, breeders and consumers.
“Insya-Allah, with the readiness and cooperation of all parties, we will continue to safeguard the country’s food security for the people’s well-being,” he concluded.
