The Agriculture Ministry is developing a national pig farming blueprint focusing on environmental management and waste control to ensure industry sustainability.

NIBONG TEBAL: The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security is drafting a master plan for the pig farming industry to serve as a national guideline.

Deputy Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin said the plan will focus on sustainable development and managing animal waste to minimise environmental impact.

“I see the main issue in pig farming as environmental management,” Chan told reporters. He warned that mismanagement could trigger social tensions along ethnic and religious lines.

He was speaking at the launch of the Kampung Valdor Centralised Biogas Facility project, which was also attended by Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

Chan said a full ban on pig farming in Selangor is unlikely to immediately affect local pork supply, as the country’s self-sufficiency level is around 65%.

“However, in the long term, we must ensure that Malaysia’s non-Muslim communities continue to enjoy their cultural rights, including access to a key protein source,” he added.

He stressed the industry needs to be managed responsibly and sustainably.

Media previously reported that the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, did not permit pig farming in the state due to environmental and public concerns.

The Ruler highlighted risks of foul odours and river contamination from farm waste.

Following this, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari announced the state will fully import pork to meet local demand.
