Home Minister says Bangladesh request to extradite Bestinet founder Aminul Islam being managed on government and police cooperation basis.
KUALA LUMPUR: The request from Bangladesh to extradite Bestinet founder Aminul Islam Abdul Nor and his associate Ruhul Amin is currently being handled by Bukit Aman in collaboration with Dhaka authorities.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail confirmed the matter is being managed on both government-to-government and police-to-police cooperation bases.
He revealed he had discussed the matter with Bangladesh Chief Advisor Dr Muhammad Yunus during a recent visit to Malaysia.
Both sides agreed the extradition request would be handled through police-to-police channels according to the minister.
Saifuddin Nasution declined to elaborate further on the ongoing extradition process.
He did not specify whether Dhaka had clarified the purpose behind the extradition request.
Last November the Home Ministry confirmed receiving Bangladesh’s application to detain Aminul Islam and Ruhul Amin.
The individuals face allegations of money laundering extortion and foreign worker trafficking activities.
Malaysia had requested clarification from Bangladesh regarding the detention’s purpose.
The government needed to determine if detention was for extradition or further investigation.
Aminul Islam founded Bestinet which operates Malaysia’s Foreign Worker Centralised Management System.
The system processes foreign worker entries into Malaysia through government channels.
Aminul originally from Bangladesh has since obtained Malaysian citizenship.
He is no longer Bestinet chairman but maintains a stake in the company. – Bernama
