MyCC probes 87 umrah operators for suspected cartel activity and price-fixing, as deputy minister advises pilgrims to prioritise safety amid geopolitical conflicts

KUANTAN: The Malaysia Competition Commission (MyCC) is investigating 87 umrah operators over allegations of forming a cartel to fix prices for pilgrimage travel services.

Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh said the probe was launched due to evidence of companies colluding to set prices.

“When they set prices, consumers cannot get the best offers. That is why MyCC plays a role in combating this cartel activity,” she told a press conference.

She advised the public planning to perform umrah to carefully consider current safety aspects, especially given ongoing geopolitical conflicts.

“In Islam, the concept of ‘isti ta’ah’ or capability must be considered. If conditions are unsafe, then it is not an obligation to perform umrah. Personal and family safety must be prioritised,” she said.

Separately, Fuziah said the government is examining measures to close the leakage gap between subsidised and commercial fuel.

She said the matter was decided in a special meeting chaired by Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan.

“We acknowledge there is a significant gap between the price of RON95 and RON97. This difference opens room for leakage when parties who should buy at commercial prices also obtain subsidised supply,” she explained.

The government will maintain the price of RON95 at RM1.99 per litre as a priority for public welfare, she added.

On today’s event, Fuziah said 133 Mega Aidilfitri MADANI Rahmah Sales Programmes have been implemented across Pahang during Ramadan this year.

A further 45 programmes are scheduled until 30 March to ensure more people can access affordable necessities ahead of Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
