WHEN it comes to dining in Malaysia, many would agree there is something uniquely comforting about the local food scene — the ability to enjoy satisfying, flavourful meals without spending much.
A post on Reddit has gone viral after one user pointed out that in Malaysia, even those on a tight budget can still enjoy satisfying, flavourful meals daily.
“RM6 nasi campur. RM3.50 roti canai with teh tarik. RM8 char kuey teow that genuinely slaps,” the user wrote, sharing the various dishes in Malaysia.
The user added that in many developed countries, a similar meal would cost four to five times more — and often taste far worse.
“Whatever problems we have, food accessibility in this country is something we should never take for granted.”
The post quickly drew attention from both locals and foreigners, many of whom shared similar sentiments about Malaysia’s food culture.
One expat from Japan, who has been living in Kuala Lumpur for eight years, said one of the biggest culture shocks they experienced was Malaysia’s unique way of packaging drinks.
“Getting a teh tarik in a plastic bag tied with a pink string felt like I was carrying a goldfish from a festival,” they said.
But over time, it grew on them.
“Now? I can’t drink it any other way. It tastes better in a bag for some reason,” they added.
Another user currently living in Europe said affordable food options there often fall short in both quality and freshness.
“The cheap food here is basically microwaved supermarket food,” they said.
“In Malaysia and other Southeast Asian countries, you actually get real food for cheap.”
