Violence against women remains a critical issue in Malaysia with over 7,000 cases reported last year, despite progress in female leadership and economic participation.

KUALA LUMPUR: Violence against women remains a pressing concern in Malaysia with 7,391 cases reported last year, underscoring the urgent need for stronger protection and prevention measures despite the growing female participation in leadership and the economy.

“While we celebrate the achievements of women, we must continue to ensure their safety and wellbeing across the country,” said Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri at the International Women’s Day 2026 celebration at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre yesterday.

Nancy said the ministry has stepped up advocacy and awareness efforts to address the issue.

She said last year alone 1,131 advocacy programmes were carried out nationwide, reaching 154,241 participants and supported by 339,813 volunteers.

“These volunteers form the backbone of our community protection networks, helping to safeguard women in every corner of Malaysia.”

She also highlighted the government’s efforts under the National Women’s Policy 2025-2030 which focuses on four key areas – leadership, economic empowerment, safety and wellbeing.

“When women are given fair and equal opportunities they do more than strengthen families – they become powerful drivers of national development.”

She also pointed to the growing presence of women in leadership roles across the country.

As of December 2025, women held 39.4% of top management positions in the public sector, surpassing the government’s 30% target. In the private sector, women now occupy 34.6% of board seats among Malaysia’s top 100 listed companies.

Nancy added that these milestones reflect the progress Malaysia has made in empowering women to lead and contribute across all sectors.

“Women are not just the backbone of their families and communities – they are strategic partners in national development.”
