KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will chair a National Economic Action Council (MTEN) meeting tomorrow to formulate strategies addressing the impact of the West Asia geopolitical conflict on national food security.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Chan Foong Hin expressed hope that the discussions would provide relief to industry players in the fisheries and crop cultivation sectors, which are facing significant challenges.
Chan stated that the conflict has triggered a global chain reaction, including an energy crisis and surging oil prices, which directly pressure Asian economies.
“The disruption in the Strait of Hormuz is a clear indication that stability of the world’s fuel supply can no longer be taken for granted, with its implications also felt in the food supply chain affecting the people’s cost of living,” he posted on Facebook.
He added that while Malaysia remains resilient, the government cannot be complacent and is committed to proactive measures to face any eventuality.
Chan earlier attended a briefing for Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu on the MTEN paper, which focused on the current state of the nation’s food supply and necessary mitigation efforts.
