Communications Ministry to use ONSA against online scams, with fines up to RM10 million for platforms failing to curb fraud and harmful content.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will intensify its crackdown on online scams and fraud through the newly enforced Online Safety Act (ONSA).

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the act, which came into force on January 1, empowers authorities to impose hefty fines on social media platforms that fail to curb illicit activities.

Platforms allowing AI deepfakes, investment scams, or online gambling could face penalties between RM1 million and RM10 million.

“We give them some time to ensure they understand all their duties and responsibilities,” Fahmi told reporters after officiating an arts programme.

A regulatory sandbox is currently testing mechanisms, including age limits, to ensure platform compliance.

The minister emphasised that ONSA’s implementation is crucial for creating a safe digital ecosystem.

It aims to curb criminal activities and block content harmful to children’s mental development.

Fahmi also warned the public against investment scams promoted on social media.

He advised people not to be fooled by syndicates offering small capital for big returns.

Regarding the arts event, Fahmi welcomed the showcase of cultural products from Malaysia and Indonesia.

He said the ministry is focused on boosting the creative industry, including music, animation, and film.

Malaysian exports like ‘Upin and Ipin’ and ‘Papa Zola’ have already found success in the Indonesian market.

“We can bring more of Malaysia’s creative industry products to the Southeast Asian level and then to the rest of the world,” he added.
