The Malaysian Red Crescent calls for adherence to International Humanitarian Law in Middle East conflicts and Afghanistan-Pakistan tensions to protect civilians and aid workers.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Red Crescent has issued an urgent appeal for all parties involved in conflicts across the Middle East and in the Afghanistan-Pakistan tensions to respect International Humanitarian Law.

MRCS expressed deep concern that escalating military operations threaten civilian safety and exacerbate the dire humanitarian situation for vulnerable communities.

The society highlighted warnings from the International Committee of the Red Cross that increased hostilities pose a significant risk to non-combatants.

All conflicting parties are therefore reminded of their obligation to comply with IHL by ensuring the protection of civilians, medical personnel, and essential service facilities like hospitals.

Red Cross and Red Crescent teams continue to deliver humanitarian assistance in affected areas wherever access is permitted.

Their ongoing efforts include providing emergency medical treatment and strengthening community preparedness levels.

These teams are also working closely with local authorities to support populations impacted by the violence.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is coordinating relief efforts with National Societies in the region to monitor urgent humanitarian needs.

MRCS national chairman Tan Sri Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah emphasised the critical need for all sides to respect the law and allow unimpeded aid delivery.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this conflict,” she stated in a press release.

She explicitly called on all parties to “respect International Humanitarian Law, protect civilians, and allow humanitarian teams to deliver much-needed emergency aid without any interference.”

The MRC further stressed that civilians, humanitarian workers, public infrastructure, and the Red Cross and Red Crescent emblem must be respected and protected at all times.
