“But over the past few months, he has kept asking my fiancé to talk to me about taking a personal loan, for a car, to start a business, and so on.”

TAKING out personal loans for family members is a predicament many find themselves in, often caught between financial caution and emotional obligation.

However, such decisions can leave the borrower in a precarious financial position, particularly if repayments do not go as planned.

A 24-year-old local woman recently found herself in such a dilemma after being asked to take out loans in her own name for her future father-in-law.

In an anonymous post shared on the Facebook group Muflis Bankrupt di Malaysia, she revealed that her fiancé’s father is currently bankrupt and has allegedly been using his children’s names to secure credit.

“Over the past few months, he has repeatedly asked my fiancé to talk to me about taking out a personal loan for a car, to start a business and so on,” she wrote.

The woman, who earns over RM4,000 a month and currently has no existing debt, turned to the online community for advice on whether she should proceed with the request.

“My question is, should I avoid this situation for now? Or is it okay for me to just take the personal loan, since I don’t have any existing debt with the bank?” she asked.

Netizens were quick to weigh in, with the vast majority strongly advising her against assuming the debt.

“Don’t be crazy and take a personal loan for someone else, even if it is family or your partner. If they fail to pay, your name and credit rating will be the one affected,” warned user Zulyadain Ishak.

Some commenters went as far as to suggest she reconsider the relationship entirely before legal ties are formed.

“Just call off the wedding. This will only lead to more problems after marriage. You could even end up divorcing due to overwhelming debt,” commented Ummikalsom T Ibrahim.
