Malaysia’s constitutional amendment to separate the AG and public prosecutor roles enters a three-month review by a parliamentary select committee.

PUTRAJAYA: The process to refine a constitutional amendment bill separating the roles of the Attorney General and the Public Prosecutor is expected to take about three months.

MADANI Government spokesperson Fahmi Fadzil said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said informed the Cabinet the Bill would be discussed at a Dewan Rakyat Special Select Committee meeting from March 16.

“The process of reviewing views, gathering feedback and improving the Bill is expected to take about three months,” he told a post-Cabinet meeting press conference.

The Constitution (Amendment) (No.2) Bill 2026 was referred to the committee yesterday following its second reading.

Azalina moved the motion to allow all relevant parties to scrutinise and refine the proposed legislation, which was later approved by a majority voice vote in the Dewan Rakyat.

She said the Special Select Committee on the Constitutional Amendment on the Separation of the Roles of the Attorney General and the Public Prosecutor would review the Bill, including the proposed oversight mechanism for the Public Prosecutor.

“The committee will propose any amendments deemed necessary and prepare a report containing recommendations on amendments to the Bill within three months, with the option to extend the period if required,” she said.

The committee will be chaired by Azalina and comprise 11 MPs from both the government and opposition blocs.
