Malaysia’s ‘courteous diplomacy’ is a strategic and principled approach to de-escalate Middle East tensions, says ABIM, emphasising dialogue over confrontation.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s strategic and principled approach of ‘courteous diplomacy’ has been described as appropriate for playing a constructive role in easing Middle East tensions.

Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (ABIM) president Ahmad Fahmi Mohd Samsudin said a cautious and principled diplomatic approach is essential in a highly complex geopolitical situation.

“ABIM takes note that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has directly engaged with several leaders of countries involved and with vested interests to call for de-escalation,” he said in a statement.

He added this effort reflects Malaysia’s commitment to continue playing the role of a moderate voice that encourages dialogue and peaceful resolution.

Ahmad Fahmi said many important diplomatic processes take place through channels not necessarily announced publicly.

He stated their effectiveness should not be judged solely through public statements or rhetoric.

The practice of inclusive diplomacy has long enabled Malaysia to maintain good relations with various parties.

This includes Gulf countries, Iran, and major world powers, allowing it to serve as a bridge for dialogue in times of conflict.

In the context of West Asia, Ahmad Fahmi said geopolitical realities must also be taken into account.

He noted that Gulf countries themselves are seeking to avoid a broader conflict in the region.

He said overly confrontational approaches from outside the region could undermine ongoing stabilisation efforts.

Malaysia must continue voicing concern over justice and peace, particularly on the Palestinian issue.

Ahmad Fahmi stressed the importance of ensuring any steps taken do not close off diplomatic space currently being pursued.

“Malaysia has traditionally played the role of a bridge for dialogue between Southeast Asia, the Islamic world and the international community,” he said.

He added this requires a balanced, prudent and forward-looking approach for the country to continue being trusted.

Calls for Malaysia to adopt a more confrontational approach should be viewed cautiously.

Ahmad Fahmi said effective diplomacy is not determined by the loudest statements but by the ability to build trust.

“ABIM calls on all parties, including civil society, to support constructive diplomatic initiatives,” he said.

He urged all to avoid polemics that could undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts.
