A Malaysian man’s hilarious story of negotiating a friend’s RM60k debt with a multiracial Ah Long gang in Mandarin at a kopitiam leaves netizens amused.
A Malaysian man’s bizarre encounter with a loanshark group has gone viral after he shared a story that many netizens say perfectly captures the strange, hilarious and uniquely multicultural reality of life in Malaysia.
In a Threads post, user Chris Lim began with a dramatic teaser: “Let me tell you all a story about love, loanshark and language.”
According to him, the incident happened about a decade ago when a friend got himself into serious trouble after borrowing money from an Ah Long.
“About 10 years ago, a friend asked for help. He took RM25,000 from loanshark and couldn’t make the payments on time,” he wrote.
“He ended up owing the Ah Long over RM60,000 with interests racking up.”
“Why? He fell in love with this girl, she was an expensive one and constantly asked him for money to buy luxury bags and jewellery. Poor simp.”
Determined to help his friend settle the matter, Lim said he contacted the loanshark himself — and surprisingly, their negotiation began in Mandarin.
“So I got on the phone with the Ah Long to negotiate, we both spoke Mandarin to each other.”
“At the meet up, the big boss Ah Long was running late. So I decided to have a cigarette with some of the members,” he wrote.
“I don’t even smoke but that was my tactic to bond and befriend them.”
“There were 2 Malays, 1 Indian and 1 Chinese. To my surprise, they were all speaking fluent Cantonese to each other. Crazy.
“And they were shocked as well that I spoke Mandarin and understood Cantonese. It was a real muhibah moment.
“Big Boss shows up. Remember, prior to this, I only spoke to him on the phone and my friend hasn’t seen him before too.
“Turns out, he was a pure Indian dude who spoke Mandarin, Cantonese and Hokkien.
“If you closed your eyes, you’d think he was pure Chinese from Jinjang,” the post read.
“And he was shocked too that I spoke Mandarin. We spent 10 minutes explaining our backgrounds. He was adopted by a Chinese family.”
Lim later painted the entire scene in a way that many Malaysians found both hilarious and oddly heartwarming.
“Let me set the scene for you: Roadside koptiam. Two brown guys, negotiating in Mandarin. Next to a clueless Chinese banana. Surrounded by a couple of Malays + Indian who were speaking Cantonese to each other. Kopi Peng. Dim Sum.”
He concluded the story with a line that resonated with many readers online.
“This is the Malaysia that I love. Diversity is strength.”
The post quickly drew amused reactions from netizens.
“I need to know the rest of the story, the scene is too funny,” one user called ilyana_isa asked curiously.
“Half way through the narrative I forgot about the loan made with the loanshark,” ridzanita joked.
“Somehow I feel that’s how Malaysia should be. Malaysians being able to speak each other’s dialect or language with no judgement. The Ah Long got it right alright,” michiet15 wrote.
